The visit had originally been planned as part of the pupils’ Activity Day at the end of the summer term, but was postponed due to the extreme heatwave. Rearranged for the beginning of the new academic year, it provided a fascinating opportunity for pupils to bring their classroom studies to life.

At the heart of the day was a visit to the Roman Baths, where pupils explored the museum and archaeological complex and saw first-hand the remarkable remains of one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Britain.

The year group also took part in specialist education sessions delivered by the Roman Baths team, delving deeper into what everyday life would have been like in Aquae Sulis during the Roman occupation of Britain.

The experience complemented the pupils’ work with the Suburani Latin course, helping them to place the people, places and society they encounter through their studies within a real historical setting.

From exploring ancient archaeology to considering how Romans lived, worked and socialised, the trip offered a memorable way to deepen pupils’ understanding of Roman Britain beyond the classroom.

It may have been a little later than originally planned, but the visit was well worth the wait – a fascinating start to Year 9 and a brilliant opportunity to see history brought to life.
