Pupils from Years 11 to 13 spent the day seeking out subjects, perspectives and details to photograph, building a valuable bank of original imagery to inspire and develop their individual coursework projects back at school.

Their first stop was Oxford Botanic Garden, where the varied planting, glasshouses and natural forms offered opportunities to experiment with composition, colour, texture, pattern and close-up photography.

From there, pupils took to the streets of Oxford, turning their attention to the city’s distinctive architecture and cultural landmarks. The iconic Radcliffe Camera provided an impressive focal point, while the Covered Market offered a very different environment, rich in colour, character and everyday detail.

The visit also coincided with the University of Oxford Open Day, giving the group an unexpected opportunity to explore some of the University’s historic college grounds. Stepping inside these remarkable spaces offered pupils further photographic inspiration, from architectural details and sweeping views to the contrast between centuries-old buildings and the busy life of a modern university.

As well as providing a wealth of photographic opportunities, the day encouraged pupils to think carefully about how they observe and interpret the world around them. Rather than simply recording what they saw, they were challenged to consider viewpoint, framing, light and composition, finding their own creative responses to Oxford’s varied surroundings.

For our Sixth Form students in particular, the Open Day also offered a fascinating glimpse into university life and the chance to experience some of Oxford’s historic academic environment first-hand.

The group returned to St Gabriel’s with an extensive collection of original photographs and plenty of new ideas to explore. With everything from botanical studies and architectural details to street photography and cultural observations captured during the day, there is now lots of material to select, develop and experiment with as their GCSE and A Level Photography projects progress.
