Debating is an invaluable skill to learn and our club aims to give students the chance to develop key analytical and public speaking skills in a fun and relaxed environment. Students work together to debate a range of issues, from the topical questions of the day to the abstract and more obscure. We use a variety of debating techniques to enable students to develop their knowledge of controversial issues and current affairs, whilst also developing their confidence and a sense of team spirit.
As well as having a lot of fun debating with each other, students also take part in inter-school events and competitions. Most recently, we attended the annual Wandsworth MUNGA, an all-day event that simulates the real UN in terms of structure, organisation and discussion. This year St Gabriel's represented the USA, and were awarded best speaker in our committee room.
Debating is open to everyone from Years 7-10 and anyone can suggest a motion for debate. We meet in the Sixth Form Common Room after school on Tuesday and welcome new members at any point during the school year.
Year 11 join with the Sixth Form for debating.
