All pupils learn Mandarin Chinese and three European languages as part of an innovative carousel curriculum.
Pupils are taught Mandarin Chinese from Year 1, by a native Chinese teacher, learning to greet each other and communicate using songs, rhymes and role-plays. By the time they reach Year 6 they are also able to read and write with increasing sophistication.
In Year 3, pupils “travel” to the Spanish Court as young princes and princesses, whilst in Year 4, they are transported to Space where they meet our Italian alien friend, Claudio. In Year 5, they discover France and its beautiful towns. Finally, in Year 6, pupils strengthen their understanding of and fluency in all three European languages.
This unique curriculum ensures that pupils develop literacy and linguistic skills as well as promoting self-confidence when speaking; attributes which are increasingly important in the global workplace. Indeed, over the last 10 years we have had a steady stream of students studying modern foreign languages at Oxford and Cambridge.
Residential trips to France (Year 5) and Italy (Year 6) offer pupils the chance to practise their newly-acquired language skills and to develop independence and self-confidence.
