On Friday, 13 January, Sixth Form Politics students were fortunate to receive a visit from the MP for Newbury, Richard Benyon, who kindly took time out of his busy schedule as an MP to meet with us. He gave us an introduction to the work he does as an MP both in parliament and outside of parliament, including his work as a member of the Intelligence and Security Committee. After this, we had the opportunity to ask him questions regarding current affairs, his work and his opinions on certain topics. We engaged in discussions about the 2016 US election, the EU referendum, his ideas on how to raise young peoples’ levels of participation in politics, and many other subjects. This meeting was a great opportunity to engage with our local MP, to learn more about the work Richard Benyon does as our MP, and to converse about political issues which are key to understanding politics. We all found the breakfast meeting interesting and beneficial to our Politics course.
