On Saturday, 3 February, sixth form students headed to the Kennet Centre in Newbury to sell necklaces for our Young Enterprise company, Montague Jewellery. The stall was set up by 9am and ran until 4pm, during this time we overcame many obstacles, for example attracting customers to our stall in an area with relatively low footfall and handling the issue of running out of our most popular necklaces. We were competing for business with 8 other teams from Downe House, St Bartholomew's School, Willink and Theale Green School. In addition to managing our stall, we were assessed by representatives of West Berkshire Young Enterprise and the Kennet Centre. The judges interviewed every company and the team members on the stall - Mia, Victoria and myself - were asked many questions. These included describing our roles within our business, any weaknesses we encountered and how we dealt with them, and how we sourced the components of our necklaces. The judges disclosed later on that the Kennet Centre is available for selling opportunities in the future, so look out for us when out in Newbury and make sure to come along and say hello.
The Kennet Centre trade fair was our most successful event so far, as we sold a total of 22 of our hand-made necklaces. Our next venture will perhaps be shortly before Mothering Sunday and then we will be attending the Area Young Enterprise final, where every sixth form company in the West Berkshire will be represented and judged. From there, the winners will progress to the county finals.
