Senior musicians treated us to a delightful and varied programme of instrumental and vocal solos and ensembles, ranging from stunning classical showpieces on flute and violin to foot-tapping jazz. The orchestra set the tone with a medley of West Side Story melodies, followed by a rousing rendition of Tequila. In this they were helped by the very keen audience, who played percussion and shouted the vital word at (mostly) the correct time. There were so many other highlights in this concert: the String Quartet's Mozart movement was lovely, St Gabriel's Singers performed brilliantly, singing amongst other things a challenging arrangement of Fly me to the moon, and the concert ended with the Big Band's stylish arrangements of The girl from Ipanema and Sway, bringing some much needed Latin-American warmth to a chilly Newbury evening. The Music Department extends its huge thanks to all performers involved.
