A Week Full of Verse

The Children's Bookshow 2016 Tour

On Tuesday 8 November Rachel Rooney, an award winning poet, visited  the Junior School and spent time with Year 5, reading her poems and inspiring us to write our own verse. We were given a hidden eye which could see telescopically, microscopically, telepathically, with x-ray vision and into the past and future. Using a huge array of vocabulary for “seeing” we crafted a class poem which included:
“My playful eye watches the trees stoop to gather their leaves and replace them on their branches,
It spies Donald Trump placing his favourite toupee on his head,
It reads my teacher’s mind to discover the answers for the test!”

Rachel then gave all pupils a copy of her book and signed them personally. It was a great afternoon.

On Thursday morning, Year 2-6 met Michael Rosen at the Corn Exchange. This popular writer is a favourite with children and so it was a really special event. The Corn Exchange was packed with schoolchildren and teachers as Michael is well-known for writing many children’s books including “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt”, “Mind Your Own Business” and “Don’t Do It!”.

During a hilarious hour, he explained how he was born in the Stone Age, the early days of “telly” with one channel and two programmes, eating chocolate cake at night and hiding the toothpaste lid in his Dad’s shaving cream, and lots, lots more. He then signed copies of his books afterwards so pupils had the chance to meet a real literary hero.

Visitors to St Gabriel's quickly recognise that this is no ordinary school. Parents are always impressed by the sense of purpose and enthusiasm of the talented, committed staff and the confidence of the extremely happy pupils. We offer girls the opportunity for a seamless journey from Nursery through to Sixth Form, with our boys leaving us at the age of 11 for their senior schools.
