The study of technology nurtures curiosity and creativity and empowers pupils with the relevant knowledge and skills to produce inspirational outcomes. Pupils develop a sense of achievement, resilience and an understanding of the world of design and developing technologies.
In Year 7, pupils begin to develop knowledge of materials and processes and to build confidence in the use of tools and equipment, including Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CADCAM). Health and Safety is imperative and pupils are guided through the safe use of all equipment and resources. During Years 8 and 9, pupils work through a range of projects to develop ingenious and imaginative end products.
In product design, pupils undertake a 'design and make' project during which they learn how to approach a design task from the outset to the outcome. Pupils research and analyse existing products before modelling, testing and evaluating the feasibility of their design. They then use workshop facilities to manufacture a high quality and individual final product. They learn theoretical principles and then apply their knowledge practically to solve a problem. As pupils progress to Year 8 and through to Year 9, they are further challenged with regard to their creativity, problem solving and ability to engineer a solution to a problem.
Food & Nutrition
Pupils develop basic practical techniques, along with critical, evaluative and analytical skills relevant to food. Each year group follows a theme-based ‘design and make’ brief relevant to their age, skills and ability. Topics covered at this stage include food safety and hygiene, basic nutrition, the role of food additives, food labelling, farming and food provenance.
The study of food & nutrition also encourages healthy eating through research, discussion, practical application and evaluation.
Challenge & Extension: Pupils are encouraged to use the technology facilities outside lesson time to either continue further study on a current project or to undertake an additional project of their choice. 'Bake Off' challenges are enjoyed by staff and students alike.
