Reading

We believe reading is a key to opening the doors to all areas of the curriculum.
Great importance is attached to introducing the children to the skills required.
We know that a child’s confidence is vital in the process so each child is given praise and encouragement at all times. Each child’s reading progress is paced at appropriate individual rate.

We aim to make learning to read as exciting and interesting as possible.

Strong emphasis is given to phonics. Our “Jolly Phonics” programme enlivens sessions with songs and videos as a fun route to learning sounds.

Colourful reading books are essential. We have many books to read with adults, in small groups of children and for individual use. In addition, we offer a wide range of reading scheme titles as we consider a variety of styles and approaches to early reading are fundamental.

Each title a child reads is carefully recorded with the information passed from class to class.

Firstly, much preparation takes place – matching letters, sound lotto and listening games.

In Year 1 and 2, there are weekly sessions of group reading. The children really enjoy reading a book together which generates excitement and discussion.

We are justifiably proud of the children’s reading standards. In the final stages of the Pre-Prep, the majority of children are reading at well above or above national reading levels.

Our parents fully support us and their children’s reading efforts by reading and listening to their children read on a regular basis. Year 1 and Year 2, and from the Summer Term, Reception children, have a reading record booklet to enable teachers and parents to communicate with each other about reading development.

Reading Comprehension Activities

Year 2 children enjoy completing a range of comprehension activities each week. The colourful and up to date textbooks provide a different task each session.
