Music is an inspirational and integral part of life at St Gabriel’s. We take an essentially practical approach to curriculum lessons, extending this outside the classroom by encouraging performance in all styles and for all abilities through the school. Girls sing, play instruments, compose their own music, study musical history and the foundations of music theory. They also have access to exciting music composing and sequencing software.
If they want to play in a rock band, develop their love of jazz improvisation, compose for a string quartet, or maybe try something completely new, they will find support and enthusiasm in the music department.
Challenge & Extension: Many pupils take advantage of the wide range of co-curricular groups on offer, or are encouraged to set up their own. All enjoy participating in informal concerts, open mic sessions, jazz and rock nights and formal classical concerts throughout the year, giving some exceptional performances both in school and in the wider community.
In addition, pupils may have individual instrumental lessons with specialist visiting teachers. Indeed, many pupils reach high standards of performance on their chosen instrument as demonstrated by their success in examinations up to grade 8 and beyond.
Able musicians follow an accelerated GCSE course, examined in Year 9.
