Mathematics

Pupils arrive in the Senior School with many different experiences of mathematics. Once here, they quickly learn to develop a positive mindset, enjoy the subject and appreciate its logic, power and beauty.

A variety of teaching styles and resources are used, for example, ICT, including tablets and other mobile devices, practical work, group work, investigations, problem-solving and games. Topics include number, proportion, algebra, geometry and measure, statistics and probability.

Girls develop an awareness of the elegance of a solution and are encouraged to concentrate on the journey rather than the arithmetic destination.

Challenge & Extension: Girls are entered for individual and team Maths Challenge Competitions and some Year 9 pupils attend the Royal Institution Master Classes. The more able are encouraged to read widely around the subject and are introduced to many recent films featuring mathematics.

Visitors to St Gabriel's quickly recognise that this is no ordinary school. Parents are always impressed by the sense of purpose and enthusiasm of the talented, committed staff and the confidence of the extremely happy pupils. We offer girls the opportunity for a seamless journey from Nursery through to Sixth Form, with our boys leaving us at the age of 11 for their senior schools.
