Avani proudly presented a special visitor to our Year 2 class. The visitor was her grandfather, Mr Gill! Mr Gill had kindly come into school to talk about his religion, Sikhism.

   

Avani and Inisa alongside Mr Gill wore their beautiful traditional costumes. Mr Gill’s turban and real dagger certainly raised the children’s curiosity!

Mr Gill explained about the ten Gurus (teachers), the holy book (Guru Granth Sahib) and the 5 K’s. The children were intrigued to learn about the custom of leaving hair uncut (Kesh), saw and touched the comb and bangle (Kanga and Kara ) and were fascinated by the idea of wearing the special shorts (Kachera. They understood that there are symbolic meanings for the 5 K’s.

The children were delighted when Mr Gill handed out homemade sweets (Kara Parshad). Apparently the sweetness symbolises the sweetness of God and the eating together symbolises equality.

According to one parent her daughter could not stop talking about the visit all the way home!
