St Gabriel's School was delighted to welcome the well known author Geraldine McCaughrean to interview her for the BBC Schools "Meet the Author" radio series.  Geraldine has written a variety of children's novels and won many awards.

A small group of pupils from Year 5 and 6 - Abigail Bridley, Kate Eastwick-Jones, Alice McGonnell and Savina Sangha - had the opportunity to ask Geraldine about her life and work as a writer, her books and characters.

The girls gained a fascinating insight into the way an author works, such as favourite places and times for writing, which authors inspired her to start writing and how she plans and researches a novel.

They learned that Geraldine writes all her books in longhand first and were treated to a look at the original handwritten notebook for her novel 'Peter Pan in Scarlet'.

Among the tips for budding young writers, Geraldine advised the girls to write firsty for their own pleasure and to make plenty of time for daydreaming!

Once the interview was complete, Geraldine gave the girls pens and presented signed copies of her books to the pupils, as well as to the school library.

The girls were hugely excited about their experience, commenting: "It's the best thing i've done!" and "all our friends will be really envious!"

BBC Schools representative Mark Macey, who was recording the interview commented on the girls' enthusiasm and said that they were a credit to the school.

The interview is due to be aired in April or May 2011.
