  • Thurs 14 Jan 2010

    Posted: 13/01/10

With many more pupils scheduled to take public exams and improving weather conditions forecast, St. Gabriel's has every intention of remaining open as usual on Thursday.  Clearly roads will still be hazardous with some icing and some smaller roads may be very difficult.  We intend that all bus routes EXCEPT ROUTE J will operate on Thursday.  For those on Stewarts' Buses, their website (http://www.riversidecreative.co.uk/somph/) will hold up to date information on their routes.

  • Update 11am 13 Jan 2010

    Posted: 13/01/10

With a total of about 100 pupils and staff on site, the school is open for business.  Years 10/11 were undertaking Science Revision classes, additional maths for senior girls, Drama workshops, PE, technology IT and english classes were all being taught.  Nursery and Pre-Prep has pupils in as does the Junior School who were in a music lesson before break.  The roads, paths and car parks in the school are all clear, and we are looking forward to lunch prepared by the core catering staff who made their way in.  True Grit - even if there is none on the roads!!

  • UPDATE - 7.10am

    Posted: 13/01/10

Conditions on most roads are treacherous with lorries blocking parts of the A34 and A339, and most rural minor roads blocked either with snow or vehicles.  St Gabriels buses have been held back and a reassessment about their ability to pick up will be made at 8.00am.  All other local bus services appear to have been cancelled.

Some maintenance staff have made it in and the main drive is being cleared at present.  School staff should make their way in safely.

It is intended that the school will remain open, though the amount of teaching possible may be limited by staff availability.  Arrangements for public examinations remain unchanged.

  • Bad weather Conditions 6.45am 13 Jan

    Posted: 13/01/10

With some 5-7cms of snow falling overnight across our area, our biggest problem today is getting staff and pupils in to school.

Currently we are assessing whether busses can be safely run - not all drivers have yet been anle to get here - and some roads are closed (jack-knifed lorry reported on the A339 to Basingstoke).

With so much good work having gone into clearing the previous snow we are in better shape than most to open and we will continually up date the site as soon as we have further information.  Staff should make their way safely into school.

  • Bus Route J Diversion

    Posted: 12/01/10

Route J - Sherfield on Loddon - bus will run on 13 Jan, but on a diverted route. After Sherfield and Sherborne St John, the bus will go to the Queen's College Arms on the A340 for 7.45am and then proceed to school via Tadley.  At present the narrow roads to Monk Sherborne, Charter Alley and Ramsdell are still too hazardous for this size of vehicle.  Parents of pupils in these villages are requested to take them to Queen's College Arms before 7.45am.

  • Business as usual

    Posted: 11/01/10

With 80 staff in today undertaking INSET training and Departmental Briefing, Public Examinations being conducetd and the maintenance staff finishing the clearing of tens of tons of snow it is business as usual at St. Gabriel's for the start of the Spring term on Tuesday 12th January.

Pupils should wear sensible shoes this week to suit either a thaw or a freeze, and a STRICT 5 MPH SPEED RESTRICTION IS IN PLACE - the greatest hazard comes from vehicles.

The forecasts are variable for this week, and further snow may hamper us but we will make every effort to continue with the pupils education.  Bus services will operate wherever possible - clearly this will depend upon whether the street/road has been cleared by the local authority - and parents should remain with pupils until they are collected.

If circumstances change, information will be posted here.
