  • Marketing and Events Managers in the Making

    Posted: 13/05/13

Years 9 to 13 had an exciting opportunity recently when Sarah Gregson of the Young Corn Exchange, a free arts events collective for 12 to 25 year olds, ran a fascinating marketing workshop. We heard how events are promoted at The Corn Exchange in Newbury and then had the chance to create our own marketing plan for an imaginary St Gabriel's event at the venue.

  • District Cross Country Championships

  • Years 3 & 4 Sing Opera

    Posted: 07/05/13

"On Thursday 18 April, the company Opera Brava came in to share some of their opera with us.  There was a man called Daniel who sang tenor, a lady called Evona who sang mezzo, another lady called Mandy who sang soprano and another man called called George who sang bass.

Daniel told us how to stand and breathe while opera singing. After that we had a go at singing a song about Italian pizza, everyone got involved and had different parts. It was really fun.

After the pizza song, they took us through the years of opera and how it evolved into lots of different styles of opera. They started in the 1700s and worked their way through the years.

One of the performances they did was set in Austria. They sang ‘Do Re Mi’ which you probably know, but they got us singing it too!

Another act they did was rock and roll from New York. It was good fun! Then when that was finished that was the end of the whole session. We got to ask questions and then they asked us which of their costumes our favourite was. They had really wacky costumes as well as pretty ones! I had a really fun day and I really enjoyed it."

  • Year 5 Take a Trip Back in Time at Ufton Court

    Posted: 21/03/13

Year 5 had the time of their lives when they had a day at Ufton Court on 5th March. We experienced the life of a Tudor. We had to dress up as Tudors too: rich, poor, girl, boy, lord or lady. Also we had to have a Tudor lunch, so no chocolate or crisps!

First we took part in a raid. We were split into two groups. One group were Catholics and lived at Ufton. The others were Protestants and were searching for a priest.

After the raid, we explored the grounds. Later we made posy bags with herbs from the herb garden, did brass rubbings and made wattle with willow. We also did some Tudor dancing, historical photo mapping, and had a tour of the house.

It was a great day; everyone enjoyed it and we were learning all the time without even noticing it!

  • Victory in the Newbury Netball tournament for the third year in succession

    Posted: 14/03/13

For the third year running the netball team were victorious at the Newbury netball tournament. Competition in the final stages was fierce with both Thorngrove and John Rankin pushing us to defend fiercely. Izzy A and Lucy T fortunately found their shooting eye in the final stages and missed very few of their shots under pressure. The girls deserve praise for their total commitment to their netball training this season; your success is well deserved.

  • Year 2 Build Their Own Igloo

    Posted: 14/03/13

Following the excitement of the real snow, early this term, Year Two embarked on a very exciting project to build an igloo as part of their Design and Technology work. The igloo is made of approximately 500 milk cartons, joined together with lots of hot glue. The girls worked as a team to collect, rinse, count and glue the milk cartons, promoting a range of mathematical and technological skills and a huge amount of team work.  Year Two are incredibly proud of their finished igloo and all pupils in Sandleford, Year One and Year Two are enjoying playing in the new, albeit temporary, structure in the playground.

  • RNLI SOS Fundraising Day

    Posted: 04/03/13

Once again, the St Gabriel's Junior Department supported the national RNLI 'SOS' fundraising day on the 25 January 2013.

The pupils and staff in colourful nautical outfits and 'Stripes and Spots' had an exciting fun sea-themed day. Through pupil's donations, a teddy bear raffle and a cake stall we managed to raise the fantastic sum of £277.

As the RNLI is a charity which relies totally on the support of the public, our cheque was very much appreciated by the Penlee lifeboat station in Mousehole, Cornwall.

The Penlee coxswain, Patrick Harvey 'Patch' is always incredulous that a school in a landlocked county takes time to help the RNLI. This year our fund raising efforts went towards buying helmets for the crew that go out on the inshore lifeboat, a worthy cause.

  • 5 Star Food

There is only one thing more difficult than achieving the top marks for Food Hygiene and Safety and that is keeping that grading, but that is exactly what the catering team at St. Gabriel's has just achieved.  Two years ago they were amongst the very select few who were granted 5 Stars by West Berkshire's Environmental Health team, and shortly before half term their inspectors returned, unannounced for a surprise inspection.  We are extremely pleased to announce that Alison and her Chartwell team passed with flying colours and retained their top award.

  • Sixth Form Visit to Food Biosciences at Reading University

    Posted: 26/02/13

A visit to the Department of Food Biosciences at Reading University provided the perfect opportunity to combine relevant knowledge and skills acquired over the previous term with an insight into student life.  Joined by former St Gabriel's pupil, Katherine Stephens (who is now carrying out a PhD at the University) the day began in the campus museum, and was followed by a tour of the microbiological research labs.

Following this, we spent time in a teaching lab where we had the chance to carry out some research and observations of our own.

Many thanks to the Department of Food  Bioscience at Reading University, Katherine and the accompanying teachers, without whom the day would not have been possible.

  • Success at first Modern Pentathlon!

    Posted: 14/02/13

My trip to Millfield was great. I had the best experience learning how to do the modern pentathlon. It was awesome meeting Samantha Murray and I had my photo taken with her and her silver medal. Whilst I was there, a synchronised swimming camp was also taking place and two of the GB Team were hosting that camp, so I got to meet three people who were in the 2012 Olympics.

The opportunity was great and I loved every minute of it. I had never done shooting or fencing before but found that I was a natural!! At the end of the camp they gave out trophies and even though I had never fenced or shot before I got a trophy for coming third over all in my age group. I felt very proud to be there and proud of my achievements.

I would like to say thank you to Mrs P for giving me such a fantastic opportunity .

  • U11 Netball Tournament Winners!

    Posted: 14/02/13

The U11 netball team were victorious at a tournament at Prince's Mead School in Winchester on Saturday. Izzy R took her captaincy role very seriously and soon had the girls running passing drills at a pace that started to intimidate the opposition.

In the final we once again came up against St Swithun's for the second time. Mrs P said that they would be feeling extremely confident having already beaten us, but that we were very capable of turning them over. After the first half we were trailing by one goal, but after a small change to our formation we finally managed to get the one goal lead we needed to win the tournament. Well done and well played all of you.

  • Holocaust Survivor Gives Emotional Talk

    Posted: 14/02/13

On Monday 4 February we were privileged to have a child holocaust survivor, Joan Salter speak to senior girls and parents about her experience. Her journey left many of the students feeling humbled; as Ellie O said “I think it made us realise how much we take for granted, not everyone was as lucky as we are today.”

The talk gave an emotional insight into the life of children affected by the Holocaust, not only those who were in concentration camps. Mrs Salter told us how she narrowly avoided deportation to the death camps on a number of occasions and escaped from Nazi-controlled Paris in a laundry basket at the age of 3.

  • Hampton Court Visit

    Posted: 13/02/13

On Tuesday 5 of February, a group of Sixth Form History students visited Hampton Court Palace in London. For the first half of the day we were taken on a guided tour of the Tudor exhibitions by an expert, who gave us a helpful insight into how life would have been for a Tudor King. We saw the Great Hall built by Wolsey and improved by Henry VIII, as well as the vast kitchens and the ‘Young Henry’ exhibition covering Henry VIII’s early life and reign.

History came to life when we spotted a Henry VIII impersonator - a picture with him was the highlight for many of us, and I think we all forgot he wasn't actually real after addressing him 'My Lord' and feeling the need to bow before him. His heated fight with Anne Boleyn was also a high point!

  • Oxford Music Festival

    Posted: 13/02/13

On Saturday 2nd February, Junior Chamber Choir travelled to Headington School to compete in the Oxford Music Festival. The girls were both nervous and excited at the prospect of singing in front of such a large audience but they absolutely rose to the occasion and performed beautifully.

It was a very close competition and we came away with second place, only one mark behind the winners. We also achieved a certificate of distinction, an excellent and well-deserved accolade for our very talented group of singers.

  • U11's Win Thorngrove Cross Country Relays

    Posted: 13/02/13

Commitment to training sessions paid off for our junior cross country teams when they competed in the Thorngrove relays recently.  The U9 team ran really well and the teams finally finished in 4th and 6th place.

The U11 team decided that victory could be within their grasp and with some last minute repositioning of their race order, they decided to attack from the front.  Their tactics paid off with Miriam B crossing the line in 1st place well ahead of the next team.

Both the weather and the course were very demanding but all our runners competed extremely well in the conditions.

The U13 team finished in 2nd place and the U15 team finished in 4th place overall.

Following this event some girls were able to attend the Inter-Schools Cross Country Championships which was rescheduled due to the snow and finally held at Wellington College on the 2nd February.

In this event the girls were competing against runners from schools across Berkshire and the competition was even stronger

  • The skiing was INCREDIBLE!

    Posted: 04/02/13

'The skiing was INCREDIBLE!  I was in skiing the beginner group 1, as I had barely skied before except for two dry slope lessons. I soon learnt the differences between dry slope and snow; snow is much faster, you slip more and it’s harder to stop! One thing I now know is that I love to ski down mountains at my own pace (which is rather fast….) and I love skiing with my friends'. (Anjelika R - Year 7)

'We were truly lucky with the beautiful sunshine every day and fresh snowfall. After our skiing and snowboarding lessons every day there was no stopping, as each evening was filled with an activity! These included a pool party, karaoke, tubing and pizza night; as well as a shopping trip to the picturesque town of Courmayeur. I really enjoyed learning to ski in such a friendly and fun atmosphere where I felt safe yet challenged as I was encouraged to go out of my comfort zone'.  (Katie F - Year 10)

On Tuesday 29th January Annabel , Ellie , Avani  and Inisa  took part in the Year 6 Maths Challenge which was hosted by Eagle House at Wellington College. The Challenge comprised of three sections, a mental arithmetic test, Counting Down and The Big Event. Counting Down was very much like the numbers section on Countdown where the girls were required to reach the target number using the four operations and the numbers they were given. The Big Event tested their mathematical knowledge in various different ways. Forty-seven schools took part, with each school sending two pairs. Each pair competed in a different section. The girls did particularly well with Annabel and Avani coming 3rd out of the 47 schools

    Posted: 22/11/12

This summer, Thatcham girl, Karina Field, who is studying A level Latin, English and Classical Civilisation at St Gabriel's entered the University of Liverpool’s Postgate and Walbank Competition.  The specific remit of this competition is to explore a contemporary question based on knowledge of the ancient world.

Karina’s essay, which combined Aristotleian ideas of human contentment with modern ideas such as the happiness index, received the following report from the judges, ‘We were enormously impressed (invigorated in fact) by the freshness and engagement of the work produced.  Karina's essay stood out in this field.  Putting together the ONS happiness index with ancient ideas of happiness was a really original idea, and one which she carried through with panache.  It was an enormously thought-provoking piece, both about the ancient and our contemporary world.'  As a result, the Postgate Prize for 2012 (£300) has been awarded to Karina Field.

  • GCSE Results

    Posted: 23/08/12

With over half of their total GCSE results at A*/A, our students continue to buck the national stereo-typical trends for girls.

Principal, Alun Jones said he was delighted with the girls’ results where they enjoyed 81% of their grades at A*/B.  “With well over 50% of the girls’ grades in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at A* and A, I am delighted that St Gabriel’s continues to completely overturn such gender stereotypes that limit girls’ interests and performance in Mathematics and Science in a society with a fascination with all things shallow”.

All really does bode well for the girls’ future studies, for example:

Ellie Oretti, achieved 10 A* and two A grades and will study French, Spanish, History and English in the Sixth Form. Louisa Lai gained 9 A* and 3 A grades and will study Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A level at St Gabriel’s.  Abigail Wooden achieved 8 A* and 4 A grades and has chosen to study French, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology next year hoping to fulfill her long time dream to study medicine in the future.

Lucy Meredith from Newbury, who achieved two A* and two A grades together with a Distinction in the AQA Baccalaureate, will study Law at Merton College Oxford.  Imogen Rolfe, from Beenham, also achieved two A* and two A grades and will read Theology at Durham.  Holly Laybourne from Bucklebury Village and Jess Scully from Hampstead Norreys both achieved an A* and two A grades and will study Theology at St Andrew’s and Psychology at Sussex, respectively.  Straight A students, Bianca Rodriguez and Naomi Wells, have chosen to study Psychology at Bristol and History and Archeology at Edinburgh whilst Emily Anderson from Bucklebury Alley, who achieved 3 A grades and a B, will study Mathematics.

Principal, Alun Jones, said “of course I am delighted with such terrific results but I am also so pleased for the entire year group.  With 88% of the girls’ results at A* - C many have achieved results beyond their wildest dreams.  The ‘added value’ this year is outstanding and reflects the exceptional working partnership the girls enjoy with their teachers”.  He added, “the girls are guided to study a mix of highly academic subjects that enable access to the top universities.  They can all move on with confidence”

  • "Good Morning Miss Mistlethwaite!"

    Posted: 24/02/12

Year 6 spent a wonderful day at Reading Museum and became Victorian children for the time they were there. We were all given Victorian names; ours were Bert Wakenshaw and Horace Willet. We met our schoolteacher, Miss Mistlethwaite, but we had to call her ma’am. As we stepped through the classroom doors and onto the creaky wooden floor we went back in time to 1885. There were enormous windows in the room to let in the light because there was no electricity in Victorian times.

The doors closed and our teacher became as fierce as a lion, we are obedient and perfectly behaved. “Good morning Miss Mistlethwaite!”

  • Thurs 14 Jan 2010

    Posted: 13/01/10

With many more pupils scheduled to take public exams and improving weather conditions forecast, St. Gabriel's has every intention of remaining open as usual on Thursday.  Clearly roads will still be hazardous with some icing and some smaller roads may be very difficult.  We intend that all bus routes EXCEPT ROUTE J will operate on Thursday.  For those on Stewarts' Buses, their website (http://www.riversidecreative.co.uk/somph/) will hold up to date information on their routes.

  • Update 11am 13 Jan 2010

    Posted: 13/01/10

With a total of about 100 pupils and staff on site, the school is open for business.  Years 10/11 were undertaking Science Revision classes, additional maths for senior girls, Drama workshops, PE, technology IT and english classes were all being taught.  Nursery and Pre-Prep has pupils in as does the Junior School who were in a music lesson before break.  The roads, paths and car parks in the school are all clear, and we are looking forward to lunch prepared by the core catering staff who made their way in.  True Grit - even if there is none on the roads!!

  • UPDATE - 7.10am

    Posted: 13/01/10

Conditions on most roads are treacherous with lorries blocking parts of the A34 and A339, and most rural minor roads blocked either with snow or vehicles.  St Gabriels buses have been held back and a reassessment about their ability to pick up will be made at 8.00am.  All other local bus services appear to have been cancelled.

Some maintenance staff have made it in and the main drive is being cleared at present.  School staff should make their way in safely.

It is intended that the school will remain open, though the amount of teaching possible may be limited by staff availability.  Arrangements for public examinations remain unchanged.

  • Bad weather Conditions 6.45am 13 Jan

    Posted: 13/01/10

With some 5-7cms of snow falling overnight across our area, our biggest problem today is getting staff and pupils in to school.

Currently we are assessing whether busses can be safely run - not all drivers have yet been anle to get here - and some roads are closed (jack-knifed lorry reported on the A339 to Basingstoke).

With so much good work having gone into clearing the previous snow we are in better shape than most to open and we will continually up date the site as soon as we have further information.  Staff should make their way safely into school.

  • Bus Route J Diversion

    Posted: 12/01/10

Route J - Sherfield on Loddon - bus will run on 13 Jan, but on a diverted route. After Sherfield and Sherborne St John, the bus will go to the Queen's College Arms on the A340 for 7.45am and then proceed to school via Tadley.  At present the narrow roads to Monk Sherborne, Charter Alley and Ramsdell are still too hazardous for this size of vehicle.  Parents of pupils in these villages are requested to take them to Queen's College Arms before 7.45am.

  • Business as usual

    Posted: 11/01/10

With 80 staff in today undertaking INSET training and Departmental Briefing, Public Examinations being conducetd and the maintenance staff finishing the clearing of tens of tons of snow it is business as usual at St. Gabriel's for the start of the Spring term on Tuesday 12th January.

Pupils should wear sensible shoes this week to suit either a thaw or a freeze, and a STRICT 5 MPH SPEED RESTRICTION IS IN PLACE - the greatest hazard comes from vehicles.

The forecasts are variable for this week, and further snow may hamper us but we will make every effort to continue with the pupils education.  Bus services will operate wherever possible - clearly this will depend upon whether the street/road has been cleared by the local authority - and parents should remain with pupils until they are collected.

If circumstances change, information will be posted here.
