U11's Win Thorngrove Cross Country Relays

Commitment to training sessions paid off for our junior cross country teams when they competed in the Thorngrove relays recently.  The U9 team ran really well and the teams finally finished in 4th and 6th place.

The U11 team decided that victory could be within their grasp and with some last minute repositioning of their race order, they decided to attack from the front.  Their tactics paid off with Miriam B crossing the line in 1st place well ahead of the next team.

Concluding a very busy week of school matches, tournaments and league matches, girls from years 3-6 took part in the Thorngrove cross country relays. All the girls have been training hard every Wednesday, with many of them persuading mum and dad to take up running with them at the weekend. The course was extremely muddy, but fortunately fairly flat and the girls decided it was a good course to pick up the pace of their run.

Twelve teams took to the start line and there was nervous anticipation as we listened to the organiser giving his instructions. The U9 team took to the course with Izzy Bn taking the job of giving her team a head start, she completed her lap as the first girl home and even ran faster than most of the boys. The rest of the U9’s ran really well and the teams finally finished in 4th and 6th place.

U11 Cross Country TeamThe U11 team decided that victory could be within their grasp and with some last minute repositioning of their race order, they decided that they were going to attack from the front. After a great start from Izzy R, Izzy A and Elizabeth Hwe were in third place behind Thorngrove and Marlston House. Miriam B then took the baton. She started closing the gap in the first 400m and then seeing the girls in front tiring, she overtook with 300m to go and struck out for home crossing the line in first place well ahead of the next team.

Our next outing will be on Tuesday 26th March at Newbury showground. I will be taking 12 U9 and 12 U11 girls, it’s not too late to start training for your place in this team.

Visitors to St Gabriel's quickly recognise that this is no ordinary school. Parents are always impressed by the sense of purpose and enthusiasm of the talented, committed staff and the confidence of the extremely happy pupils. We offer girls the opportunity for a seamless journey from Nursery through to Sixth Form, with our boys leaving us at the at the age of 11 for their senior schools.
