Knitting and Stitching

On Wednesday 5 October, the Textiles and Art students went to the Knitting and Stitching Exhibition at Alexandra Palace in London, with Miss Keenleyside and Miss Hunter. Throughout the course of the day we were able to meet practicing textile artists and ask them lots of questions about their work, including Anne Kelly, Catherine Fox and Dionne Swift. We were also able to look around other textile galleries within the exhibition and we took many photos which we will be taking inspiration from.

In the first part of the exhibition there were several textile responses, (examples shown below) to the gardens of Capability Brown who was the designer of our school grounds.

We also managed to see a live demonstration from well known textile designer, Anne Kelly, who was making an appliquéd and hand-stitched beetle postcard. It was really useful and interesting to understand what techniques she used and we could use in our work.

It was a very useful and enjoyable day.

Visitors to St Gabriel's quickly recognise that this is no ordinary school. Parents are always impressed by the sense of purpose and enthusiasm of the talented, committed staff and the confidence of the extremely happy pupils. We offer girls the opportunity for a seamless journey from Nursery through to Sixth Form, with our boys leaving us at the age of 11 for their senior schools.
