Happiness and Emotional Health

St Gabriel’s has a reputation for its excellent pastoral care and this year we have an exciting addition that will boost this already strong side of the school.  We have engaged The Emotional Health Academy, a new and outstanding innovation set up by West Berkshire which gives us access to counselling for pupils, group seminars to cohorts, parents’ information evenings, staff training and also fast track access to any of the outside agencies that we might need to call upon to support our pupils.  The importance of emotional, social and mental wellbeing in young people is well documented and we recognise that happy pupils achieve more.

Form 9S have been the first to benefit from an excellent interactive session on 'Restorative Friendships' with our new counsellor Liz Ewart. This thought-provoking session involving discussion and role play will be completed by all Year 9 pupils. Giving pupils the tools to cope, is key to developing lifelong emotional health.

As Principal Ricki Smith explains "I am really excited that we are the first independent school to embrace this innovative offering, something the Department of Education is looking closely at rolling out to schools in other counties."  Mr Smith's thoughts on this initiative, and the importance of happiness, can be found in the Independent School Parent Magazine article linked below.

Visitors to St Gabriel's quickly recognise that this is no ordinary school. Parents are always impressed by the sense of purpose and enthusiasm of the talented, committed staff and the confidence of the extremely happy pupils. We offer girls the opportunity for a seamless journey from Nursery through to Sixth Form, with our boys leaving us at the age of 11 for their senior schools.
