Years 9 to 13 had an exciting opportunity recently when Sarah Gregson of the Young Corn Exchange, a free arts events collective for 12 to 25 year olds, ran a fascinating marketing workshop. We heard how events are promoted at The Corn Exchange in Newbury and then had the chance to create our own marketing plan for an imaginary St Gabriel's event at the venue.

Year 5 Take a Trip Back in Time at Ufton Court

Year 5 had the time of their lives when they had a day at Ufton Court on 5th March. We experienced the life of a Tudor. We had to dress up as Tudors too: rich, poor, girl, boy, lord or lady. Also we had to have a Tudor lunch, so no chocolate or crisps!

First we took part in a raid. We were split into two groups. One group were Catholics and lived at Ufton. The others were Protestants and were searching for a priest.

After the raid, we explored the grounds. Later we made posy bags with herbs from the herb garden, did brass rubbings and made wattle with willow. We also did some Tudor dancing, historical photo mapping, and had a tour of the house.

It was a great day; everyone enjoyed it and we were learning all the time without even noticing it!

An well-taken early goal from Madi L J settled the rest of the girls into an excellent first half performance with a hat-trick from Millie Q.
Hampton Court Visit

On Tuesday 5 of February, a group of Sixth Form History students visited Hampton Court Palace in London. For the first half of the day we were taken on a guided tour of the Tudor exhibitions by an expert, who gave us a helpful insight into how life would have been for a Tudor King. We saw the Great Hall built by Wolsey and improved by Henry VIII, as well as the vast kitchens and the ‘Young Henry’ exhibition covering Henry VIII’s early life and reign.

History came to life when we spotted a Henry VIII impersonator - a picture with him was the highlight for many of us, and I think we all forgot he wasn't actually real after addressing him 'My Lord' and feeling the need to bow before him. His heated fight with Anne Boleyn was also a high point!

The Challenge comprised of three sections, a mental arithmetic test, Counting Down and The Big Event. Counting Down was very much like the numbers section on Countdown where the girls were required to reach the target number using the four operations and the numbers they were given. The Big Event tested their mathematical knowledge in various different ways. Forty-seven schools took part, with each school sending two pairs. Each pair competed in a different section. The girls did particularly well with Annabel and Avani coming 3rd out of the 47 schools

"Good Morning Miss Mistlethwaite!"

Year 6 spent a wonderful day at Reading Museum and became Victorian children for the time they were there. We were all given Victorian names; ours were Bert Wakenshaw and Horace Willet. We met our schoolteacher, Miss Mistlethwaite, but we had to call her ma’am. As we stepped through the classroom doors and onto the creaky wooden floor we went back in time to 1885. There were enormous windows in the room to let in the light because there was no electricity in Victorian times.

The doors closed and our teacher became as fierce as a lion, we are obedient and perfectly behaved. “Good morning Miss Mistlethwaite!”
