Classical Civilisation

‘Look and you will begin to see’ - Euripides

Classical Civilisation is a growing subject at A Level and the strong classical community within school enables students to become truly immersed in the ancient cultures they study. It is a rigorous subject which requires pupils to interact with a variety of texts in translation, as well as learning about Greek and Roman history. Students will be expected to think critically and engage personally with the material we cover. We will look at modern scholarship on a wide variety of topics and consider issues of gender, race, democracy, and how much ancient cultures can hold a mirror up to the events we are experiencing today. Sixth form students are encouraged to come on our foreign trips, museum days, and theatre visits to enrich their knowledge with first-hand experience of the classical world.

Classical Civilisation appeals to students interested in History, Literature and History of Art. The course requires no previous Classical study.

Visitors to St Gabriel's quickly recognise that this is no ordinary school. Parents are always impressed by the sense of purpose and enthusiasm of the talented, committed staff and the confidence of the extremely happy pupils. We offer girls the opportunity for a seamless journey from Nursery through to Sixth Form, with our boys leaving us at the age of 11 for their senior schools.
