Lunar New Year Celebrations 2023

A fantastic week celebrating the Year of the Rabbit!

The whole school were involved in celebrating Lunar New Year. The celebrations started with a fantastic lunch on Monday, 23 January, put on by our catering team. Photos of the delicious food and menu are below!

Mrs Clarkson, our Mandarin teacher, organised a range of activities across the school. Year 7 and Year 8 were invited to a crafting workshop where they were taught how to cut the character “Chun春”. This character means spring, relating to how Chinese New Year it can also be called Spring Festival. Red envelopes were also made, to hold a chocolate coin, referring to good luck and good fortune in the New Year.

Those in Year 10 & Year 12 who study Mandarin made bubble tea and watched the Chinese animated film "Hero is Back". The story in this film comes from one of the four great Chinese novels, "Journey to the West". These students were able to experience Chinese food and culture whilst practising their listening and reading skills.

Year 9 Mandarin pupils delivered an assembly to the Junior School. They taught the pupils how to say Happy New Year in Chinese (xin nian kuai le) and performed two stories to explain the twelve zodiac animals and how Chinese New Year originated. Year 9 finished the assembly with a rendition of the popular Chinese square dance with the Junior School pupils.

It's been a great week of workshops and learning. Thank you to Mrs Clarkson for everything you have done to make it so informative and engaging for the whole school.
